Attic Insulation

Energy savings start at the top. The Department of Energy's recommended standard is 15 inches of attic insulation, and the majority of homes in this area average only three to five inches.

The problem we keep finding in Cypress attics

As Houston's home services leader, our certified air conditioning and heating pros have been in thousands of attics, and the biggest problem we find is not enough insulation. That gap between 15 inches and three to five inches is not a rounding error. It is up to 20 percent of a household's air conditioning and heating dollars that could, quite literally, be floating away through the ceiling before it ever reaches a room.

The Home Energy Efficiency Inspection

We check for adequate insulation in the attic, the walls and the crawl spaces, then test for energy loss from radiant heat off the roof, improper attic ventilation, and air leaks around the home. The technician recommends ways to minimize the loss once the inspection is done.

What the Home Energy Efficiency Inspection measures

15in

The Department of Energy's recommended standard for attic insulation.

3–5in

What the majority of homes in this area actually average, measured attic after attic by our own technicians rather than assumed.

20 percent

Of a household's air conditioning and heating dollars that can be lost through that gap. It is the reason a comfort complaint sometimes turns out to be an insulation job rather than an equipment job.

What the walk looks like

Depth is measured, not guessed at from the hatch

A technician walks the decked area with a depth gauge, checks the equipment already up there while they are at it, and looks at the walls and crawl spaces on the way through rather than treating the attic as the only place heat moves. It is often the same visit that turns up a duct worth sealing, since both sit in the same space.

Twenty five years of attics

The same problem, in different houses, for a quarter century

As Houston's home services leader, our certified air conditioning and heating pros have been in thousands of attics across Cypress and northwest Houston, and the insulation gap is the single most common thing they find. It is not a sales pitch built to sound alarming, it is what the depth gauge reads more often than not.
